The Indian
Motorcycle history

The 1904 Indian motorcycle used a reliable direct-drive chain as opposed to the more common leather belt.
The 1904 Indian motorcycle grew out of a chance encounter at a bicycle race in the early 1900s.

The 1913 Indian 61 Twin motorcycle was typical of the performance bargains available from this great American motorcycle maker in the early 20th Century.
The 1913 Indian 61 Twin has a V-twin engine, which comprised 90 percent of Indian's engine production at the time.
The 1926 Indian Prince was designed for first-time
 motorcycle owners.
Indian's fortunes rose and fell during the Roaring Twenties, but when the 1926 Indian Prince motorcycle was built, the company was on a high
The 1935 Indian Chief motorcycle competed directly with the Harley-Davidsons of the day and was one of Indian's top sellers.
The 1935 Indian Chief wasn't agile around town, but came into its own as speed increased. It has a sort of brutal beauty born of purpose.
Though expensive for its day, at a price of more than $1,000 when a new Chevrolet car cost $700, the 1940 Indian 440 motorcycle offered a streamlined look, a smooth ride, and an unusual inline-four-cylinder engine.
Only about 10,000 Indian 440s were built over the model's 15-year production run.

The 1942 Indian 741 motorcycle and Indian 841 motorcycle were military bikes built for use in World War II. The 741 used Indian's conventional V-twin design, but the 841 had a modified twin and shaft drive intended for desert fighting.
The 1942 Indian 741 was akin to Indian's civilian bikes, with a V-twin engine based on a peacetime design.
The now-legendary V-twin 1946 Indian Chief motorcycle emerged as Indian's flagship model after World War II, and the popular design relegated the American company's four-cylinder and smaller V-twin models to history.
The 1946 Indian Chief became the company's only
model after the war. This fine example is equipped
with the factory sidecar.

The 1953 Indian Chief motorcycle, big, heavy, bedecked with bodywork, was the great bike on which a proud American company rode into the sunset.
As the last Indian motorcycle, the 1953 Chief is among of the most collected bikes from the great American brand.
